Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peels for Skin Rejuvenation

Skin rejuvenation is a popular way to reduce skin irregularities and uneven pigmentation by revealing healthier skin beneath the surface of damaged, imperfect skin. Many different procedures are considered for rejuvenating for the skin, but chemical peels and microdermabrasion are some of the most commonly performed. While both treatments can help refresh and revitalize your appearance, the procedures are very different.

At Rao Dermatology, we offer both of these nonsurgical treatments to help restore your natural beauty.

The Basics of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is considered a skin polishing treatment. The top layer of skin is gently debrided away, resulting in a surface that’s smoother, softer, and evenly toned. Microdermabrasion treats dull, rough skin and can reduce the appearance of superficial acne scars. It’s also recommended to patients who want to smooth their fine wrinkles and clear clogged pores. The procedure stimulates the skin to produce new skin cells and collagen, both of which contribute to youthful, glowing skin. Results are almost immediately noticeable.

For the procedure, a diamond-tipped device is applied to the skin and the machine sprays very fine particles at high speed. The particles are mildly abrasive and loosen dead skin cells while a gentle suction device removes the dead skin from the face. The particles debride the skin, and the suction encourages the body to produce collagen and improve the skin’s blood flow for a healthier appearance.

A typical treatment session typically lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. The best results are achieved after at least six treatments, but it can be repeated multiple times spaced at least three to four weeks apart. After this initial series, touch-up treatments can be performed occasionally to maintain results.

All about Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can provide dynamic results for dry skin, sun-damaged skin, acne scars, and fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels have cosmetic benefits, but they’re also commonly used to treat chronic skin conditions, melasma and sometimes pre-cancerous conditions. There are three strengths of peels – light, medium, and deep.

A few days after the peel, the patient’s face starts to form a crust that eventually peels off. Once the peeling phase is complete, the newly revealed skin is softer, evenly toned, and more youthful looking.

A chemical peel starts with skin cleansing. The chemical is applied to the skin in layers and left to sit for five to 10 minutes. The face starts to feel warm as the peel is absorbed into the outermost layers of skin, and some people report feeling tingling sensations.

When the solution has been on the skin for the right amount of time, it’s neutralized and washed from the face before a moisturizing barrier is applied. Patients should be diligent in using sun protection until the healing process is complete, typically from two to four weeks.
