Meet Holly Miller, FNP-C: Your Trusted Dermatology Expert
Holly Miller is a highly experienced Family Nurse Practitioner-Certified (FNP-C) who has dedicated over five years of her career to providing exceptional dermatological care at Rao Dermatology. Her journey into dermatology began during her education at Fresno State, where a colleague shared valuable advice that would shape her entire career: dermatology is the one specialty where you can make a visible difference in people's lives.
That colleague was Joseph Contreras, PA-C, now part of the Rao Dermatology team, and their professional relationship has flourished ever since. Holly credits Dr. Rao's humble nature and compassionate leadership for shaping her into the skilled practitioner she is today, describing her colleagues as her "second family."
Holly's Journey to Rao Dermatology
From Student to Specialist
Holly's path to dermatology wasn't straightforward, but it led her exactly where she needed to be. During her second year in the FNP program, her clinical site in Lemoore was sold, forcing her to find a new placement at the last minute. This challenge turned into one of the best career decisions she ever made.
She found placement at a practice where she worked under Julie Guyette, NP, whom Holly describes as "the most intelligent and compassionate individual I have ever met." It was here that she first encountered Joseph Contreras, PA, who visited weekly to handle dermatology cases. Working alongside Joseph sparked Holly's passion for dermatology and all aspects of skin health.
Overcoming Challenges
When Joseph later contacted Holly about a dermatology position at Rao Dermatology, she faced a significant personal challenge. As part of the interview process, she needed to shadow Dr. Rao during MOHS surgeries, but Holly had a history of not tolerating surgical procedures well.
Determined to succeed, Holly took a creative approach to preparation. She watched countless surgical videos on YouTube, choosing increasingly graphic content to desensitize herself to the sight of surgical procedures. Her dedication paid off – not only did she successfully complete the shadowing experience, but assisting with MOHS surgeries and wound closures has become one of her favorite aspects of working with Dr. Rao.
What Sets Rao Dermatology Apart
According to Holly, the sense of cohesiveness among team members at Rao Dermatology is unmatched in the field. The entire team operates as a united front with one primary goal: providing the highest quality dermatological services to every patient.
"People have the opportunity to choose from many dermatology providers in the Central Valley," Holly explains. "Our dedication to our patients and commitment to providing high-quality care is what sets us apart from other practices." This patient-centered approach ensures that each individual receives personalized attention and the most appropriate treatment for their specific skin concerns.
Expert Summer Skincare Advice from Holly Miller
Essential Sun Protection Strategies
Holly emphasizes that proper skincare during summer months is crucial for preventing multiple skin issues, including skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and worsening of existing scars. Despite loving outdoor activities, especially poolside relaxation, she stresses that sun protection is non-negotiable.
Her top sun protection recommendations include:
Timing is everything: Plan outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 2 PM when UV rays are less intense. If you must be outside during peak hours (10 AM to 2 PM), extra precautions are essential.
Choose the right sunscreen: Use broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Reapplication every 90 minutes is crucial, regardless of the SPF level.
Invest in protective gear: Wide-brimmed hats provide excellent facial protection. For extended outdoor exposure, solar-protective clothing eliminates the need for constant sunscreen reapplication.
Managing Summer Skin Challenges
Summer activities can trigger eczema flares, especially with increased pool time and sweating. Holly recommends staying hydrated from the inside out and using hypoallergenic products for bathing, moisturizing, and laundry.
Key eczema prevention tips include:
• Always rinse off after swimming• Apply generous amounts of lotion after showering• Moisturize twice daily, especially after bathing• Increase lotion application when experiencing itchiness

Professional-Grade Options
Holly highly recommends the new Rao Dermatology Pro-Tect line, which offers ideal hydration and protection with SPF 45. For patients with sensitive skin who react to most sunscreens, she suggests Vanicream products, which are formulated without parabens, fragrances, gluten, and other common irritants.
Trusted Drugstore Brands
For daily moisturizing, Holly endorses both Cetaphil and CeraVe lotions. She particularly loves CeraVe healing ointment for treating very dry skin patches or eczema flares.
For swimming and water activities, choose sweat and water-resistant formulations. Remember that even SPF 100 products require reapplication every 80-90 minutes and after toweling dry – Holly suggests setting a timer to ensure consistent protection.
