Annual Skin Check

Annual Skin Check

As you may already know, November is the American Academy of Dermatology’s National Healthy Skin Month. We support this initiative, and encourage all of our patients to schedule their annual skin exams. These exams are crucial to identify early stages of skin cancer, as they give the clinician the opportunity to examine and identify any potential risks. If you have an upcoming annual exam, here are a few tips to help you prepare, thanks to the Skin Cancer Foundation:  Come makeup free. By coming with a clean face to your appointment, it allows for our clinicians to thoroughly assess the facial skin, especially around the eye area. Remove all makeup, and use a gentle cleanser. Avoid using any other products prior to your exam for the freshest skin possible. Remove nail polish prior to your visit. Many people forget about this detail – your skin exam also includes your hands

Stress on Skin

In today’s day and age, it’s common for many to experience significant skin problems from one common cause: stress. Stress plays a critical role in our overall health, and is  the root of  many dermatologic issues – from acne, eczema, psoriasis, hives, rosacea, dermatitis, to hair loss and more, stress is commonly underrated as a core catalyst.  It’s common that people don’t realize how their lifestyle affects their skin appearance. This starts with a balanced diet – by ensuring that you receive a complete diet with proper nutrition, this will help balance your hormones, vitamins, and minerals that play an important role in your stress management. It doesn’t stop there, though. Exercising is an integral part of our overall skin appearance as well. When we work out, our body releases hormones that reduce stress – such as cortisol and other endorphins. This allows your body to sleep better, elevate your

Sleeping for Skin

Sleep is a crucial piece of our overall health, but did you know that it also plays a large role in your skin’s appearance? Sleeping affects our hormones, collagen levels, and blood flow, all contributing factors into our skin’s overall look and feel. Here are a few tips to incorporate into your nighttime routine to  improve your skin health: Wash your face every night: Throughout the day, dirt, oil, and pollution enter your pores, which can lead to acne breakouts. Wash your face each night after removing your makeup to avoid any irritation  – our cleansing line will do just the trick. Make sure you’re getting enough rest: Studies show that a full eight hours of sleep each night is necessary for most. If you’re not resting well enough, your skin may appear dull, discolored, and dehydrated, leading to signs of aging. By having a steady sleeping schedule, you’ll be

Skincare for children

3 Ways to Help Your Child’s Sensitive Skin

A proper skincare routine starts at a very young age. Your child has developing skin, and it’s key to prioritize skin health and maintain those habits into adulthood. If you’re wondering where to start, we’re breaking it down for you. As always, please feel free to call your local Rao Dermatology office for our recommended skincare products. Bath Time Safe skincare for young children starts in the bath. Using a mild temperature will ensure that your child won’t experience chills or burns. Once you nail down the right temperature, soaps and shampoos will play a huge role in sensitivity. To ensure your child won’t experience any potential skin harm, reach for bath ingredients that are chemical and fragrance free. Post-bathing care such as lotions and creams should also be nontoxic and non-fragrant.  Gentle Garments Did you know that your laundry detergent affects your child’s skin? Similarly to bath products, using

Skin Cancer Awareness Month

The American Academy of Dermatology Association declares May as “Skin Cancer Awareness Month,” and Rao Dermatology is taking part in these initiatives to raise awareness for the betterment of our patient’s skin health. As temperatures are rising, it’s common to enjoy more time outside, exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. Before you head out the door, we’ve gathered our top five tips from some of our team members to protect yourself during Skin Cancer Awareness Month and beyond. Wear proper sunscreen: Amneet Brar, FNP-C, and Yuritzi Terronez, Lead Medical Assistant, prioritize sunscreen in their daily routine. Rao Dermatology recommends a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, every day under makeup. Not only does it protect your skin against UV rays, but also prevents early aging in skin. Choose sun-protective clothing: Lightweight fabrics, such as linen and cotton, are important to cover your skin throughout the season.

Breaking Down HA

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) has made a surge in the skincare industry. It’s popularity can be attributed to it’s hydrating qualities, but what many people don’t know is that this molecule is actually already in our bodies – acting as fluid in the eyes and joints. The molecule holds a large amount of water to prevent moisture from evaporating, and over time, our body’s amount of HA decreases. Now, in recent times, skincare products such as moisturizers or serums include HA, as it supports moisture retention and smooths the skin. When used properly, HA can reduce redness, appearance of wrinkles, and dermatitis, while keeping skin firm and healthier. If you have decided to add HA to your skin regime, you want to be careful about the amount of HA in your products – as combinations with other ingredients can affect the outcome. While HA can be used along with other acids,
