Skin tags, or small, soft skin growths, are common and usually do not indicate a medical concern. When skin tags occur in places where skin rubs other skin or clothing, they can become irritated, and are often in visible areas of the body.
At Rao Dermatology, we offer multiple techniques to safely and completely remove skin tags from the body. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with our medical team and have your skin tags examined to determine the best course of treatment.
What are Skin Tags?
Affecting nearly 3 million Americans each year, skin tags can occur anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the eyelids, underarms, groin folds, neck and under the breasts.
While some skin tags are the size of a pin head, others can grow as large as a marble. They may also vary in color from blending with surrounding skin to being slightly darker. Most skin tags are harmless, but for cosmetic purposes many men and women choose to have them removed.
What Treatments Are Used to Remove Skin Tags?
Currently, Rao Dermatology offers three different techniques for removing skin tags:
- Using liquid nitrogen, some cases of skin tags are removed by freezing them off cryogenically.
- Sterile medical scissors can also be used to cut skin tags off gently without damaging surrounding skin
- Electrodesiccation of the skin tags are also often used, where a controlled electric current is delivered from a needle-shaped electrode, eradicating the growths.
All procedures are performed in-office with minimal to no scarring afterward.
Which Skin Tag Removal Treatment is Right for Me?
During your consultation, your skin condition will be evaluated, and your personal preferences will be discussed to determine which course of treatment is best for you. Certain contraindications may apply to some therapies.
Should I Have My Skin Tags Evaluated?
Although skin tags are easily recognized and are often self-diagnosed, only a medical professional can tell you whether your skin tags are benign or if there is a more serious health issue present. In some cases, a biopsy may be necessary to rule out other health concerns.
It is important to monitor skin tags and other growths on the skin for changes over time and to report these findings to our medical team for immediate evaluation and accurate diagnosis and treatment.
