Blepharoplasty
Surgical eyelid rejuvenation to correct drooping upper eyelids and restore a refreshed, youthful appearance.
Blepharoplasty — commonly known as an eyelid lift — is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. At Rao Dermatology, blepharoplasty is performed by Dr. Babar K. Rao and Dr. Alamgir, who combine their dermatologic surgery expertise with an eye for aesthetic proportion to deliver natural, refreshed results.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty addresses drooping (ptotic) eyelids that can impair peripheral vision, cause eye fatigue, and create a heavy, tired appearance. The procedure removes the redundant skin through a carefully placed incision in the natural eyelid crease, leaving virtually invisible scarring.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty targets under-eye bags, puffiness, and festoons caused by herniated fat pads and lax skin. The procedure restores a smooth, rested contour beneath the eyes. Most patients experience 1–2 weeks of swelling and bruising followed by visible improvement that continues to refine over 3–6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
Good candidates are adults with drooping upper eyelids, puffy lower eyelids, or excess skin that affects vision or appearance. You should be in good general health, a non-smoker or willing to quit before surgery, and have realistic expectations. A consultation with Dr. Alamgir will determine if this procedure is right for you.
What is recovery like after eyelid surgery?
Most patients experience swelling and bruising for 1 to 2 weeks. You can typically return to light activities within a few days and most normal activities within 2 weeks. Final results become visible as swelling resolves, usually within 4 to 6 weeks.
Will there be visible scarring?
Incisions are carefully placed in the natural creases of the eyelids, making scars virtually invisible once healed. With proper aftercare, most patients see minimal to no visible scarring.
Is blepharoplasty covered by insurance?
Upper blepharoplasty may be covered by insurance if drooping eyelids are documented to obstruct your field of vision. Cosmetic lower eyelid surgery is typically not covered. Our team can help determine your eligibility and assist with the documentation process.
How long do the results last?
Blepharoplasty results are long-lasting, typically 5 to 10 years or more. While aging continues naturally, most patients enjoy their refreshed appearance for many years without needing repeat surgery.
