Am I a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are incredibly popular among people who want a safe and entirely non-surgical way to turn back the hands of time. While injectable neuromodulators can be used to address dynamic wrinkles or wrinkling that’s caused by facial movement, dermal fillers can instantly reduce the appearance of deep creases along your nasolabial folds, hollows at your cheeks and loose and sagging skin. If you want a high-performing cosmetic treatment that doesn’t entail tissue removal, cutting or downtime, dermal fillers could be right for you. Following are several ways to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for these treatments.

Different Options for Dermal Fillers

There are currently countless options in dermal fillers. Some of these products are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles caused by volume loss, while others can be used to strategically reshape the lips or nose. Certain dermal fillers last for months before being broken down and metabolized by the body. Others can last for one year or more. Determining whether you’re a suitable candidate for any one of these solutions will entail a review of your cosmetic concerns, your aesthetic goals, your ability to tolerate primary ingredients and your overall experience with dermal filler technologies.

More often than not, long-lasting facial fillers are usually reserved for those who have had ample opportunity to test these materials out and are ready to make long-term commitments to their treatment results. With short-term fillers, it’s necessary to receive repeat injections throughout the year to maintain a consistently youthful appearance. As such, many dermal fillers are used once every six to nine months by patients to limit the appearance of static wrinkles across the visage.

Using Dermal Fillers with Other Non-Invasive Cosmetic Treatments

If you’ve been using injectable neuromodulators such as BOTOX® to minimize the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines and perioral wrinkles, then you already know just how fast, easy, and pain-free these treatments can be. Static wrinkles or wrinkles that result from facial volume loss are considered to be more advanced signs of aging. The causes and effects of these wrinkles exist much deeper within the skin’s layers. These are wrinkles that can only be resolved via aggressive and invasive surgical procedures or through the use of dermal filler technologies. If you are not able to achieve the smooth, youthful and virtually line-free look you want with neuromodulators alone, facial fillers could be right for you.

Allergy Testing

Many of the top dermal fillers are largely comprised of a special acid that’s naturally-occurring within the human body. This is hyaluronic acid and exists to support the skin right at its foundation layers. When hyaluronic acid is the primary ingredient in a dermal filler, the body is unlikely to reject it or to issue an uncomfortable allergic reaction. Longer-lasting fillers contain special microspheres that are comprised of ingredients that aren’t naturally-occurring. With these, we may need to perform a simple skin test to ensure that allergic reactions are unlikely. Allergy skin testing may not be necessary, however, for patients with past dermal filler experience and comprehensive lists of known allergies.
