Combining BOTOX® and Fillers for Added Results

BOTOX® and dermal fillers are designed to achieve similar results, but they work in very different ways. BOTOX® temporarily freezes the muscles of the face, thereby helping to minimize lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, such as Restylane® and Juvederm®, fill lines and wrinkles by increasing the volume of the treated area. Because both products work by different methods, they are well-suited to being used together.

The Difference

The most significant difference between dermal fillers and BOTOX® is the specific location of the injection. While fillers are injected subcutaneously, or under the skin, BOTOX® is injected directly into the muscle layer.

The Benefits of Using Both BOTOX® and Dermal Fillers

One of the biggest reasons that this combination is growing in popularity is because it increases the duration of the results. By increasing the volume beneath the skin as well as targeting the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines, the results can last longer. This is especially true of deeper facial wrinkles.

Which Product Should Be Used First?

There are no specific standards dictating which product should be injected first, and the order in which they are used varies with the doctor doing the procedure. Some treatment providers feel that injecting the dermal filler first provides the best results. They believe that it enables them to better decide which wrinkles will need more attention when the BOTOX® is being injected. However, others prefer to inject the BOTOX® first. This is because once BOTOX® causes the facial muscles to relax, other wrinkles and fine lines may become apparent. They can then use the dermal filler to fine-tune the end results.

What Are The Potential Risks of Using Both?

So far, there are no known risks to using both products together other than those side effects that can already occur with BOTOX® and dermal fillers. The only other question is whether both products should be used in the same visit, or if it’s best to space the treatments out. It is often recommend to allow one to two weeks between each procedure, particularly if BOTOX® has been used first. This gives the BOTOX® enough time to take full effect, and it also gives the facial tissues a chance to recover from the initial treatment, which can greatly minimize discomfort. That said, plenty of people opt to have both treatments done at the same time so they can avoid a second visit.
