MOHS Surgery for Skin Cancer Treatment

Living with any type of cancer can be frightening, and skin cancer is no different. Skin cancer is one of the most noticeable forms of cancer, especially when it affects your face or your scalp. It’s visible for all of the world to see and can disfigure you, especially if it is not treated promptly. In some cases, your condition may be treated only to make a comeback at a later time. You want to eliminate the disease before it progresses. You also want to avoid the possibility that your skin cancer could develop into the more serious form of cancer known as melanoma. MOHS surgery may be the best option for you when you are thinking about skin cancer treatment.

When is MOHS Surgery Recommended?

When it comes to basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, MOHS surgery is often the preferred skin cancer treatment. It is often recommended for cancer that has affected the neck, the head or the face. These areas are the most challenging when it comes to choosing an effective form of treatment. When skin cancer affects such an area, your cancer is noticeable. If not treated properly, you take the risk of seeing it spread in an area that is obvious. This can be extremely upsetting if your skin cancer disfigures you. While there are a variety of treatment options available, they may not be as effective as MOHS surgery in stopping the skin cancer in its tracks before it can do any more damage.

What Can You Expect During MOHS Surgery?

During MOHS surgery, your skin cancer cells will be removed a fine layer at a time. The area that is to be treated will be numbed first. Then the first layer of skin will be removed and immediately tested in the lab for the  presence of cancerous cells. This process will be repeated until the doctor finally gets to a layer of healthy cells with no detection of additional cancer cells. MOHS surgery has a high success rate; a recurrence of cancer in the treated area is highly rare because it is so effective. Once the cancer has been removed, the existing wound will need to be closed.
