How to Prepare for a Chemical Peel in Manhattan, NY

Chemical peel treatments are able to rejuvenate your skin, remove minor lines, wrinkles, and scarring, and give you a more youthful complexion.  They are used to remove dead and damaged skin, revealing the younger, healthier skin underneath.  For a professional chemical peel in Manhattan, NY, make sure to contact the experts at Rao Dermatology.

Types of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels come in three basic levels: light, medium and deep.  Each level targets your skin at varying depths.  Light peels penetrate the epidermis, medium peels reach the dermis, and deep peels penetrate the lower levels of the dermis. Depending on the penetration of the peel, preparation can be minimal or extensive.  Proper preparation will help ensure you have the best possible results.  Of course, during a consultation at our office in Manhattan, NY, we will help you better understand how to prep yourself for your treatment.

Do Not Stress Your Skin Before the Treatment

Do not use other chemical peels, including over-the-counter peels, for at least two weeks leading up to your treatment.  Additionally, avoid microdermabrasion treatments because they work similar to peels.  If you have had a microdermabrasion procedure, it is generally best to wait at least 14 days before additional skin treatments. You also should avoid tanning and limit your sun exposure for two to three weeks before treatment.  If you must have any prolonged exposure to the sun, be sure to use sunscreen.  Overall, be gentle with your skin.

Depending on the depth of your peel, you may also have to use an ointment or lotion prior to your treatment. Topicals like glycolic acid or a retinoid cream help to even out your peel and promote faster healing. However, it all depends on the situation. Also, if recommended, some of your current medications may need to be discontinued for a period before and/or after your treatment. Our team can tell you more about this as well. Some preparations are less universal.  For example, if you are a smoker, it is best to stop smoking for a period leading up to your treatment.
